Job Title: Mental Health Clinical Nurse - Acute Response Team

Position Overview: As a Mental Health Clinical Nurse in the Acute Response Team (ART), you will play a critical role in providing rapid assessment and intervention for patients experiencing acute mental health crises. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, you will be delivering expert mental health care, supporting patients in crisis, and facilitating access to appropriate services and resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to calls for assistance related to mental health crises in various clinical settings, including the emergency department, general wards and community settings.
  • Assessment & Crisis Intervention: Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, including risk assessments, to determine the severity of patients' conditions and develop appropriate crisis management plans.
  • Therapeutic Interventions: Provide evidence-based therapeutic interventions and support to patients in crisis, including de-escalation techniques and psychoeducation, to promote stabilisation and recovery.
  • Collaborative Care: Work closely with the multidisciplinary ART and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care plans, ensure continuity of care, and facilitate referrals to specialised mental health services as needed.
  • Patient Advocacy: Advocate for the needs and rights of patients experiencing mental health crises, ensuring their voices are heard and their preferences are respected in the decision-making process.
  • Family & Carer Support: Provide education and support to families, carers and the support networks of patients in crisis, helping them to understand and cope with the challenges of mental illness.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of mental health assessments, interventions and outcomes in accordance with organisational policies and legal requirements.
  • Team Development: Support with developing your teammates' knowledge of best practices for managing mental health crises and promoting mental well-being.
  1. Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, preferably with a post-graduate qualification in mental health.
  • Current AHPRA registration.
  • Experience in mental health nursing, preferably in acute care or crisis intervention settings.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric disorders, crisis intervention techniques and therapeutic modalities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build therapeutic relationships with patients and their support networks, as well as other clinicians within the multidisciplinary AR team.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development, with a willingness to stay updated on emerging trends and best practices in mental health care.

Working Conditions

  • Minimum 12-week contract.
  • Full time (80 hours per fortnight).
  • Working patterns of either 8:30am-5pm or 1pm-9:30pm, including weekends and public holidays, to ensure appropriate coverage of acute mental health response services.
